Aging in Place and LiveWell Mobility and Modification’s Promise

As the population of “Baby Boomers” ages, the number of older adults in the United States has increased significantly. By 2035, for the first time in history, there will be more people in the US age 60 and older than age 18 and under. Surveys of older adults indicate that for many people, their preferred living environment as they grow older is in their existing homes and community settings. As a company committed to the comfort and needs of the aging community, LiveWell Mobility and Modifications has identified many of the factors that support “aging in place” and is able to offer mobility solutions and home modifications that will best meet the needs of the growing older adult population.

Many adults with chronic conditions experience declining health as they age. Aging itself brings physical and sensory limitations as well as concerns around personal safety, financial security, and memory loss. Many older adults need help with activities of daily living (ADLs) and additional healthcare services. They face the difficult decision of whether to move out of their homes into institutional settings, such as traditional long-term care facilities or skilled nursing homes, to obtain the services they need. However, surveys of older Americans consistently report that older adults prefer to continue to live in their own homes and in their own communities. One study showed there are devastating consequences for people who are forced to move again and again.

Relocation, especially to nursing homes, may contribute to stress, isolation, grief, and to a decline in physical and psychological functioning. Although living in one’s home is preferable to living in an institution for most people, without social interaction and a meaning and purpose in life, living at home, often alone, can also introduces health risks. Most older adults may not be acutely ill, but may lack the ability to function independently. Medications for age-related health problems, surgery not previously considered possible for older people, good nutrition, and research into diseases associated with aging have all contributed to longer lives but not necessarily to a greater quality of life. For older adults with a support system of family members, caregivers, and friends, aging in place, a broad concept that provides health and personal care while the individual remains in their home and preferred community, may still be the most desirable option.
