We're back with another breathtaking LiveWell bathroom remodel project! LiveWell received the call from the husband that his wife was recovering from a massive stroke and that she was being released from outpatient rehab soon. He knew that she could not return to their home with the bathroom the way that it was. The husband asked LiveWell to provide an assessment with ideas on how to make the bathroom as safe and as accessible as possible for her return. We knew this bathroom would be breathtaking when we were finished, but it would also allow her to navigate to all areas of the bathroom without having to leave her wheelchair at the door.
LiveWell tore out the entire existing bathtub and existing stand-up shower area to create one large, zero-entry accessible shower. We had to build a floor to ceiling wall in order to close this shower in and the inside wall is tile, the outside wall is drywall. We modified the existing structure to prepare for a roll-in, zero-entry shower opening. The shower features new floor to ceiling tile and a custom niche in the wall to hold toiletries. We installed new shower fixtures and grab bars for extra support. This shower turned out beautifully!
Next, LiveWell installed a new barn door that slides all of the way out of the way when entering the bathroom. Traditional doors to not open completely clear of the doorway and create a tripping hazard or they create a barrier to entry for a wheelchair. Using a sliding door, such as a barn door, allows the door to move completely out of the way, plus they add a beautiful feature to the room.
We also reframed the toilet closet to enlarge for another barn door and provide better wheelchair access. We demolished the existing walls, reframed, painted, and installed the barn door. We also added grab bars for extra support.
We widened the doorway to the closet to 32". We also repaired and improved the shelving in the closet.
Lastly, we removed the existing vanities and installed custom-built, wheelchair accessible vanities. This allows for a wheelchair to slide smoothly under the countertop to make using the sink easier. This eliminates and need for the wife to stand or move out of her wheelchair, where she could potentially fall.
We are so pleased with how this remodel turned out and so are our happy customers! We leave them with a much safer, more accessible space that they continue to use for many years to come.
