Small changes that make mornings easier

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis is the most common type of chronic arthritis in children. It causes joint pain, swelling, warmth, stiffness and loss of motion. Many children are stiffest in the morning and may limp when they first get up. Stiff, painful hands and knees make ordinary things hard: turning a doorknob, stepping into a tub, climbing stairs.

The home changes for arthritis are often smaller than for other conditions, but they matter every single day.

What usually changes first

• Hardware. Lever door handles, D-pull cabinet handles and lever faucets that work with a closed fist.

• The bathroom. A seated shower with a hand-held spray, grab bars at the toilet and shower, and a comfort-height toilet.

• Stairs. A second handrail, or a stairlift for a child whose knees and hips flare badly.

What families tell us

Parents describe good days and bad days. On a flare day, a bathroom that worked last week does not work at all. Families want a home that is easy on the worst day, without looking like a hospital on the good ones.

How we plan with your OT or PT

Your child's OT knows which joints are affected and which grips and motions to avoid. We walk the house with that list, share drawings with the therapist and adjust before we build. The written estimate goes to you and to the therapist so a case manager has what they need.
